How to travel by train with your bike
Ready for the Christmas holidays? Not yet? Then if you want to think of a less polluting alternative, you could try the train combined with a bike, because you know there are plenty of routes you can take in the snow on fat wheels.
For example the Laghel Family Tour, which is particularly recommended in the cold season. It starts in Arco and goes as far as the Arboretum, with an exciting descent into the Sarca Valley. Also effortless is the Lake Cavedine tour, an itinerary that offers the ‘lunar’ experience of the Marocche di Dro Nature Reserve. You can find here our Luxury Bike Hotel in Torbole, where you will find a 360 degree service for yours bike tours
In general, bicycles can be rented or brought from home, bearing in mind that on board regional trains marked with a special pictogram, one bicycle or e-bike per traveller is allowed, up to a maximum length of 2 metres, at a price of 3.50 euro as a daily supplement. On regional trains without a pictogram, the transport of one properly closed folding bicycle per passenger is allowed free of charge, even outside the special bag, provided that the dimensions do not exceed 80x120x45 cm. Each traveller may only carry one bicycle by purchasing the corresponding bicycle transport service, with compulsory reservation, at a price of 3.50 euros. On the Italy-Switzerland Eurocity trains, there are a number of bicycle seats where it is possible to attach a bicycle mounted on the rack and positioned upright; the service costs 12 euros.
As of 1 March this year on Frecce trains, one bicycle (of all types, as long as it is disassembled and/or foldable) may be carried free of charge, subject to a limit of one per passenger and provided it is properly closed, switched off (if electric) and placed in the special bag, the dimensions of which must not exceed 80x110x45 cm. The bicycle must only be placed in the baggage compartment. Bicycles may also be carried on some international trains in a dedicated carriage or in special spaces provided in passenger carriages.
The bike-friendly trains are the Pop (20 bike spaces in train), Rock (18 bike spaces) and Blues (12 bike spaces). Then there are special trains such as the Trenobus delle Dolomiti which carries out its combined service from the beginning of June to the beginning of September or the Train-bike of the lagoons from Venice to Trieste.
