Liguria by Bike
When we think of Liguria we think to the Riviera dei Fiori, the aquarium of Genoa, and superb olive oil.
Obviously there is much more.
If we think of its geographical location, it is bathed by the Ligurian Sea and dominated to the north by the Ligurian Alps and the Ligurian Apennines.
Famous all over the world for the Cinque Terre, it is the guardian of many other treasures.
Let’s start with the wonderful cycling routes.
Cycle paths by the sea or on the little-trafficked streets of the hinterland, wherever you can find exciting landscapes, between sea and mountains, and the possibility of cycling at any time of the year thanks to a mild climate.
There are many options for two wheels itineraries, such as the slate cycle path from Lavagna towards the hinterland of Tribogna, along the course of the Entella river (33 km on different types of surfaces) or in the footsteps of the legendary Milan – Sanremo, you can cycle from San Lorenzo al Mare to Sanremo (40 km including the climb that leads to Cipressa and then down to Aregai).
If you want to take a short ride with the children from Varazze to Cogolet, there are just over 4 kilometers of a flat cycle path almost completely along the coast, which runs on an railway abandoned more than forty years ago.
From Gattorna to Carasco in the hinterland of Rapallo you will find a 45 km tour immersed in nature alternating white roads and asphalted secondary roads with little traffic.. Or from Chiavari to Portofino: the route follows the Gulf of Tigullio, with postcard views and varied course.
If you are a guest of the Aregai Marina Hotel & Residence you can enjoy a full green immersion, and have a direct view of the sea. From here the direct access to the Riviera cycle path, recognized as one of the most beautiful cycle paths in Europe.
The cycle path was built when the old railway network was closed. The start is in Santo Stefano al Mare, right in front of the Aregai Marina hotel, and the route winds for over 19 km to Ospedaletti. Most of the stretch is flat and is directly exposed to the sea.
The total lenght of the tour is 40 kilometers of moderate difficulty, passing through the towns that line the coast, there are numerous catering services where you can stop, recovering energy and savor local dishes.
MTB enthusiasts can opt for the 60 kilometers of the Dolcedo Cycle Tour. In the direction of Imperia, leave the cycle path in San Lorenzo and continue on the state road up to the Prino stream, which must be climbed on the asphalt along it from its right.
The Hotel Riviera dei Fiori is a small jewel that overlooks the sea, and nearby begins the cycle path that winds, for most of the stretch along the coast, for over 24 km towards Ospedaletti. The Hotel offers its guests a bike rental, a bike area with bike storage, a workshop corner, a bike wash corner and a washer-dryer for technical sports clothing.
For the more trained we recommend the Via del Sale, 100 kilometers that can be done both with the MTB or with e-bike. An adventure that starts from an altitude of 1,800 meters in Piedmont on Colle di Tenda, on the Italian-French border and plunges onto a road that is completely open to vehicles without particular difficulties, crossing the Marguareis natural park, the Navette wood, up to Mount Saccarello overlooking the Valley Argentina, an area that is then mainly traveled downhill to return to the beaches of Liguria.
The Ligurian hinterland deserves to be discover “on two wheels”.
The Alta Via dei Monti Liguri (AVML), is a ridge path that crosses the crests of the Alps and the Ligurian Apennines, connects Ventimiglia to Ceparana, 540 km long, and is entirely cycle path.
It is a route specifically designed to be traveled by MTB or on ebikes, it is divided into stages of different length and difficulty: Ventimiglia – Realdo – Colle Scravaion – Passo del Faiallo – Pietralavezzara – Baita Monte degli Abeti – Passo Calzavitello – Ceparana .
It goes through Beigua Regional Natural Park, the Ligurian Alps Regional Natural Park, the Capanne di Marcarolo Natural Park and the Aveto Regional Natural Park.
You can also opt to do the 5 Terre National Park in stages by following the panoramic road of the Cinque Terre from Levanto to La Spezia. An itinerary of medium difficulty, with about 800 meters of elevation in the initial part.
This stretch is also included in the variant to the European Eurovelo5 of the Via Romea Francigena.
