Cesena will host the Green Road Award 2023
Cesena will host the eighth edition of the Italian Green Road Award 2023
(Cycling Tourism Award), the award that every year enshrines the best green cycle routes of the Italian regions that promote holidays on two wheels with services aimed at slow tourism. Cesena therefore becomes
the focus of a weekend (1-4 June) dedicated at slow tourism. The city, home of the Malatesta Library, will organise a three-day event that will enhance the offer related to cycle tourism in its territory, involving all
citizens, starting with young people, The 2nd of June is the Bike Forum day, that will emphasise the importance of holidays on two wheels with the presentation of the third edition of the Bicycle Ecosystem Market Watch by Banca Ifis, which this year will offer a renewed focus on cycle tourism trends together with an in-depth study on e-bikes.
Cesena
It has been chosen as the host city for 2023 as last year’s the Award for cycle tourism awarded the Savio Valley. But not only that, Cesena is a bike-friendly city, so much so that in 2018 it won the second edition of the Urban Award, an award for sustainable mobility precisely because of the completeness and richness of the projects in the field. Even though it is a small city, it has some real gems to visit, such as the Malatesta Library commissioned by Novello Malatesta in the mid-15th century, which is one of the most precious testimonies of humanistic culture and Unesco World Heritage Site as Memoir du Monde; the 14th- century Rocca Malatestiana, from whose walkways you can enjoy a beautiful panorama; the Santa Maria del Monte Abbey, of the Benedictine monks specialised in the restoration of ancient books; the Cathedral of San Giovanni Battista, the Masini fountain, and Piazza del Popolo with Palazzo Albornoz.
Grand Tour Valle del Savio
This is a 172 km permanent route, mostly paved, on roads no longer used and on riverside, along the territories crossed by the river Savio. It is a loop itinerary, which can be started and finished in any of the six
municipalities of the Unione dei Comuni Valle del Savio: from Cesena, from the medieval village of Montiano, from Mercato Saraceno famous for its Art Nouveau buildings, from Sarsina with its Plautina Arena and
Plautus festival, from the Sanctuary of San Vicinio or the ultra-millennial basilica, from Bagno di Romagna with its thermal baths and Pesarini palace, from Verghereto with the hermitage of Sant’Alberico and Monte
Fumaiolo. The route also crosses the Parco delle Foreste Casentinesi, a UNESCO heritage site, with Sasso Fratino and beech forests, partly crossing the geographical border between Emilia Romagna and Tuscany. Well signposted and connected to other routes and to the railway network, the Grand Tour is rich in services for cyclists and cycle tourists, such as public and private charging points for e-bikes, permanent signage and information panels, water fountains, bike sharing, affiliated shops, accommodation facilities, restaurants, bars
and bike-friendly wineries with cycle workshop and bike guides, luggage transport, all united in the Valle Savio Bike Hub, a public-private project that combines sustainability and innovation.
