Umbria by Bike
Umbria is ‘the green heart of Italy”, and the perfect scenario for riding a mountain bike or road bike.
But not only nature will captivate you, also its beautiful medieval towns on top of the hills, the thick woods and the cuisine, for a food and bike combination of truffles and wine.
To see Perugia, which rises in the hills and hosts the Palazzo dei Priori, but also Assisi, Spoleto, Perugia, Orvieto and Norcia.
Orvieto by bike
If you want to cycle in search of works of art in Orvieto, go and see the famous Cathedral and the Well of San Patrizio. But not only that, there are other interesting medieval, Etruscan and Renaissance monuments scattered throughout the city as well as suggestive underground sites.
Do not miss the 14th century Palazzo del Popolo, Hadrian’s labyrinth, the Belvedere temple, the Rocca or Fortezza Albornoz, but also the Torre del Moro and the necropolis of Cannicella.
Wine Route
The Borgobrufa SPA Resort stands along the Wine and Art Route. We are in Torgiano, one of the most famous villages for the production of wine on the Brufa hill in the middle of a 12-hectare park and among 33 sculptures by internationally renowned artists.
All around there are numerous routes for bicycle lovers to discover hills, lakes and cultural walks. Take a short ride of about twenty kilometers with the gravel through plowed fields and vineyards. In some places the route runs along the Tiber river and passes near several wineries where you can stop for a pleasant break.
The village of Torgiano is not only famous for wine but also for oil.
The only real tough uphill to ride is the one that leads back to Borgo Brufa, but the slopes are never demanding.
Another 65 km itinerary runs in the Umbrian Valley, ideal for road bikes, between Bevagna, Spello and Assisi. You can also make a stop in Montefalco, famous for Sagrantino wine.
Spoleto – Norcia
You ride along the route of the former railway starting from Spoleto along the road that leads to Forca di Cerro. The track is well-trodden in the first part and a little more bumpy in the second, so we recommend the use of mountain bikes. Beware that there are several dark tunnels, which can only be approached with a headlight or flashlight.
Nera cycle path
It is a short and simple, but no less fascinating, itinerary along the Nera River, a tributary of the Tiber that cuts the heart of Italy in two, creating precipitous gorges of incredible beauty. A path of just 12 km, suitable for everyone, even families with children. In fact, it has not important elevation, it is in total safety and everything runs along the banks of the river, which crosses crevasses and tunnels.
From Santa Rita to San Benedetto
Valnerina is synonymous with religion, just think of Cascia or Norcia. The town famous for the cult of Santa Rita has always been the destination of a significant pilgrimage.
The same cultural print is for the tour starting from San Benedetto, patron saint of Europe, with the homonymous path that leads from Norcia to Cassino on a long journey. 300 kilometers which involves the Sibillini mountains and continues towards Castelluccio, Cascia and Monteleone di Spoleto, and it is possible doing it by bike.
Via di Francesco
A single track to reach Assisi following San Francesco path, starting from the North (La Verna) or from the South (Rome).
From Assisi you can decide to reach the Eternal City by bike following the Via di Francesco – di Roma. The cycling stages are parallel to the walking route and they have similar stages.
Via di Francesco in the north is divided into six stages, the southern one in eight stages and the Via di Roma in 14 stages.
Assisi – Spoleto cycle path
It is a flat itinerary, almost completely in its own place and well signed, which in a few kilometers will lead you in the green discovering the beauties of art cities such as Assisi and Spoleto, but also villages such as Bevagna, Trevi and Montefalco.
If you are well trained you can travel the Assisi-Spoleto in just one day, but we advise you to stay here at least a weekend, to be able to do things slowly and dedicate the right time to discover the beauties you will encounter along the itinerary and, why not, to try the typical food and wine delicacies.
