Marche by bike
The Italian region Marche is surrounded by the Apennines and the Adriatic se: for this reason it offers many cycling itineraries and routes nestled in nature.
Ancona is a port city on the Conero coast where it’s possible to ride among beaches, limestone cliffs and medieval villages.
In the inland there are also antique fortifications on the top of the -Monti Sibillini- National Park hills and glacial valleys. Here different cycling routes are possible: the Vallelunga and Frontignano loop, Montefortino – Santa Lucia and the Gerosa Lake, the Tronto valley, ect… there are not only mountain bike routes but also amazing cycle paths along the coast such as those between Pesaro and Fano.
Sibillini mountains, from sea to mountain
223, 73 kilometres, total ascent 3810 metres, maximum altitude 810 metres, medium difficulty: this is what awaits you if you choose to ride following the Sibillini route that starts from the sea and arrives up to the mountain.
The departure from Civitanova Marche, a small town by the Adriatic, riding along the panoramic cycle lane to then continue by the ridge of the hill until you reach the Morrovalle village. Riding hill after hill you get to go through the Potenza river valley also known as “Valle del pensare” (the Valley of thinking) due to the fact that it was a place loved by the poet Giacomo Leopardi.
Then you pass through Appignano, known for the craftsmanship of baked clay and for an annual legume fair, and finally you arrive to Cingoli, also known as “il Balcone delle Marche” (the Marche balcony).
Other cycling tourism destinations are San Severino Marche and Serrapetrona that are near the Caccamo Lake and where the vines that produce the Vernaccia DOCG grapes are grown. Downhill you can reach the Pievefavera and Polverina villages. The next stop is the hill that crosses the Sibillini Mountains National Park to then reach Fiastra at an altitude of 650 metres with its turquoise-coloured lake.
From here on you have to face the hill that goes through the “Gole del Fiastrone” (Fiastrone gorges), an area in the greenery dug by the river that creates the lake.
Another stop is the centre of Sarnano which is located on a hill and is characterized by houses in baked stones around Alta square preserving the mark of a fortified “castrum”. Here on you leave again to follow the route that takes you to Azzurri Mountains. The final destination is Penna San Giovanna, in Montegranaro, one of the world’s footwear centres located about 10 kilometres from sea; here it is possible to visit the shoe museum and the old workshops of the master shoemakers, who still make shoes by hand today.
An enogastronomic route
If you like good food you can organize a cycling tour to discover the regional specialties such as the fish soup, the must doughnut, the fried cream, the nougat tart, the “vincigrassi”, the “cargiù” (Italian-style ravioli stuffed with sheep ricotta, porcini mushrooms and cherry tomatoes), the “caiuscolo”, the “crescia”, the “calcioni” with ricotta and “gnocchi” with duck sauce.
It is recommendable to start your route from “Villa Cattani Stuart”, one of the most famous historic houses of the Pesaro and Urbino provinces. The villa and its typical Italian gardens date back to a period of time between 1630 and 1680.
The Altipiani itinerary
Another suggestion could be to combine two regions such as Marche and Umbria in a single journey. To do so, you can follow the Altipiani itinerary:
It’s a unique cycling tourism experience that allows you to enjoy a nature full of incredible landscapes, as well as its amazing natural and artistic treasures, the creativity and the extraordinary varieties that characterize it. We can say that this is the beating heart of Italy: a unique itinerary of its kind, a cycling holiday that combines sea and mountain travelling along the Altipiani that delimitates the two regions.
Discovering abbeys by bike
Following the abbey itinerary means to rediscover great centres of medieval culture, where monks created a civil and spiritual society of great historical-artistic value narrated by written texts and illuminated books, churches and abbeys. The route allows to rediscover the immense heritage connected to the spiritual life and the identity of the Marche: the Appennine mountains and the valley system, the caves and other spaces such as the abbeys, are perfect places to meditate and meet new lifestyles. You can start from Villa Anitori, a country house hotel surrounded by private gardens with a swimming pool. 10 kilometres along a characteristic asphalted road you will reach the Fiastra Abbey natural reserve with its endless woods and paths for both riding and trekking.
