Train and bike, ideas throughout the Italian Boot

If you really don’t feel like moving your car, there are several cycle routes to reach by train with your trusty two-wheeler. You can check rates and services on the Trenitalia website, meanwhile we’ll entice you with some gems.

Aosta – Verrès: along the valley following the route of the Dora Baltea, 50 kilometers between castles, woods, vineyards. The only challenging stretch is the Saint Vincent climb.
Chivasso – Ivrea: runs parallel to the Dora Baltea, 45 km which also touch the Park of Lake Candia and the hamlets of Betlemme and Mandria and the castle in Mazzè.

Ospedaletti – San Vicenzo al mare: the cycle path is 20 km long, you can also switch towards old Bussana, where, however, you have to do 2 km uphill, to get to
know this medieval village recovered by artists.
Voghera – Varzi: it is the Oltrepo Pavese greenway, it runs through fields, vineyards and follows the route of the old railway. 38 km suitable for everyone mostly on asphalt and some stretches on dirt.

Bolzano – Caldaro: the Oltradige cycle path created by recovering the track of a railway crosses the course of the Adige and Isarco rivers, and runs parallel to the Wine Road.
Treviso – Ostiglia: the route of 60 km in total follows the route of an old railway along the countryside to discover the Venetian villas and “barchesse”, such as Villa Cornaro designed by Palladio.

Grado – Tarvisio: 176 km passing through Palmanova, Aquileia and Udine, and arriving at the Coccau border, where the Alpe Adria cycle path continues for another 234 km up to Salzburg.
Rimini – Novafeltria: along the course of the Marecchia from the coast towards the hinterland, pedaling and getting to know medieval villages. 35 km with an altitude difference of 353 meters.
Poggibonsi – San Miniato: Tuscan stretch of the Via Francigena, 40 km to be
covered in the countryside, on stony roads and some gradients, between the Chianti vineyards and the Val d’Elsa.
Civitanova Marche: on the Abbazie way, it is a route with a difference in altitude of 715 metres, a total of 100 kilometers on secondary roads with low traffic. You pass inside the Monti Sibillini National Park.
Spoleto – Norcia: discovering the Valnerina along the former railway up to the plateau of Santa Scolastica. 60 kilometers of cycle path on a protected site, on asphalt and dirt.
Paliano – Fiuggi: follow the course of the Prenestina, 50 kilometers in the Ciociara countryside, with an uphill gradient of 517 meters and mainly on asphalt. Between the villages of Paliano, Piglio, Acuto and Fiuggi.
Ortona – Vasto: the coast of the “trabocchi”, with sections of cycle paths
alternating with asphalt, 43 km within everyone’s reach. Along the way, you cross villages such as Rocca San Giovanni, one of the most beautiful in Italy.
Naples: the oblique city is a 40-kilometre circular route that starts and ends at the Mergellina station, in an urban setting but far from the busy streets and touches places such as Castel dell’Ovo or Piazza Plebiscito.
Lecce – Squinzano: route in the Salento countryside among olive groves and farms, through the Rauccio natural park, 40 km on secondary roads.
Metaponto – Matera: through the Murgia Park between archaeological areas up to Matera. 58 easy kilometres, but the last 15 km are uphill all the time.
Guardia Piemontese – San Lucido: along the Costa dei Cedri, 23 km on secondary roads on asphalt and dirt road. Among the stops are the Terme Luigiane and the Sanctuary of San Francesco di Paola.

Fiumefreddo di Sicilia: a circular route that develops between the Alcantara Valley and the Etna Park. 48 demanding kilometers with terrain ranging from asphalt to dirt.

Carbonia – Sant’Antioco: follows the section of the Sulcis railway, 20 km on secondary roads. It is included in the context of the Santa Barbara Mining Trail.
